Terrorism was a term used to describe the latest Hitchcock movie. 911 was a number you associated with emergency services in Europe or a late-night store. Then people could store their electronic devices under their aircraft seats and it was questionable if you really should put out a cigarette on take off! In-flight movies were something that occurred when the passenger beside you had spent too much time in the bar prior to take-off and has decided that the curry he just ate may not wish to remain in his stomach. I remember as a child being invited up to the cockpit to see how they drove the airplane. If I attempted to do this in present times, I would be looking at three to five years extended all inclusive vacation in a penal center. Vacationing is not what it used to be.

Many years ago, you could collect a return air-ticket, arrive at your destination, grab a cab and say where is good place to stay in this town! Those were different times. Today, in high season, that question will generate in the cabbies mind the word gullible. You just stated that you dont know what or where you are and you are prepared to blindly hand over your holiday spending money. And he will expect a handsome gratuity for divulging this local knowledge. We hope those times are gone. Today people to not want to jeopardize their limited and precious vacation. They demand a vacation PACKAGE. People would rather not concern themselves with exchange rates of local currencies, where to eat or if the water is safe to consume. They want all-inclusive vacation resorts that guarantee them the basic elements of any quality vacation. They demand to understand that there is transport to take them to and from their self-catered apartment and that the pool can be accessed without having to change into street clothes. They also demand to know that the room has a safe in which they can place their valuables while they are out site-seeing.
Vacation resorts are sadly an escape from our every day work routines. I say sadly due to the fact that it presupposes resistance to the main portion of our wakeful day. The archetype of dissipating 70 per cent of our wakeful day just to pay bills has never seemed logical to me. The contention that we wont have enough in the future and so need to keep working for a living, doesnt make sense. Personal experience has been that if you follow your passion, something unanticipated always shows up. As the old saying goes if you do what you have always done, then you can expect what you always get. There is no room for something new to happen. What is offered up is the relief of two or three weeks away from the establishment in order to recover on your European tours. Does that make sense? Certainly, if you stop banging your head against the wall it feels great when you stop, but that doesnt argue for hitting your head from the get-go!
